Who Can Contact the Parish Priest?
Anyone may ask for the priest’s help; you do not need to belong to the congregation. St James’ clergy are available during a final illness and after a death. Please contact the parish office (office@stjamesexeter.org or 01392 420 407).
First Steps After a Death
- Contact a funeral director.
- The director checks the priest’s diary and books the church or crematorium.
- The priest then phones you, visits, listens to your memories and plans the service with you.
What Happens at St James’?
- Venue: The funeral can take place in church. The committal (final farewell) may follow immediately or later at a local crematorium.
- Requiem (optional): The clergy can celebrate a funeral requiem, a Communion service for the person who has died.
- Memorial service: A memorial or thanksgiving service for the life of the deceased is also an alternative. The funeral itself can take place at a crematorium or a cemetery, before the thanksgiving service.
- Personal touches: Together you can choose readings, music and prayers that reflect the life being honoured. An organist is available, as well as the Church choir and musical soloists, and the church hall next door may be available for hire for a reception; the parish office handles hall bookings.
- If people cannot attend: Ask about a recording or live streaming of the service (this depends on volunteer availability).
- Interment of ashes: St James’ offers a garden of remembrance for the interment of your loved one's ashes if you wish.
Costs
The Church of England sets a national fee for the service. Extra fixed charges apply, for example if you wish to have an organist. Your funeral director usually pays these on your behalf.
